CAFFE` vs COFFEE

Ci sono migliaia di cose, tradizioni e abitudini che differenziano l'Italia dal resto del mondo; una delle piu` significative e`, secondo me, il modo diverso di vivere una piccola esperienza come quella di bere un caffe`.

There are thousands of things, traditions and habits that distinguish Italy from the rest of the world; one of the most significant is, in my opinion, the way of living a small experience such as having a coffee.
 

Il caffe` si beve in tutto il mondo, ma non allo stesso modo, negli stessi momenti o con la stessa attitudine; se vieni dall'Italia dove il caffe` e` molto di piu` di una semplice bevanda farai sempre fatica ad adattare le tue abitudini a quelle di un altro popolo.

Coffee is drunk all over the world, not in the same way though, nor in the same moment of the day and with the same aptitude; if you come from Italy, where coffee is much more than just a hot beverage, you will always find it hard to adjust your habits to the ones of another culture.

Ecco quali sono secondo me le differenze piu` interessanti e profonde nel modo di vivere il caffe` in Italia e in Australia: 
 Here are the most interesting and deep differences in the way of drinking coffee in Italy and Australia:

-In Italia quando pensi a qualcosa di quotidiano pensi al giornale e al caffe' / In Italy when you think about "daily" you think about a newspaper and a coffee.

-In Australia di quotidiano c'e` solo la sveglia che suona al mattino / In Oz the only daily thing is your alarm going off.

-In Italia "caffe`" vuol dire casa, tazzina, zuccheriera, caffettiera / In Italy "coffee" means home, ceramic cup, sugar container, coffee-pot.

-In Australia "Coffee" vuol dire coffee-bar, take-away, bustina di zucchero, macchina del bar / In Oz "coffee" means coffee-bar, take away, sugar sachet, coffee machine.

-In Italia il caffe` si beve con amici, colleghi, famiglia o soli / In Italy coffee is drunk with friends, family, colleagues or alone.

-In Australia il caffe` si beve principalmente con i colleghi / In Oz coffee is mainly drunk with colleagues.

-In Italia "Caffe`" vuol dire ESPRESSO / In Italy coffee means ESPRESSO.

-In Australia se chiedi un caffe` ti chiedono "che caffe` vuoi?" / In Oz if you ask for a coffee they will ask you "which coffee do you want?".

-In italia esiste il CAFFE`-LATTE per la colazione a casa, il CAPPUCCINO per la colazione al bar, l'ESPRESSO o il MACCHIATO per le pause, per quando lo si offre, per il dopo-pranzo o il dopo-cena (in questo caso forse anche CORRETTO); e forse meno considerato l'AMERICANO che sostituisce un te` caldo. Tutti questi li bevi seduto e nella ceramica e il piu` grande sta in una tazza da cappuccino / In Italy there a LATTE is drunk in the morning, for breakfast when home; a CAPPUCCINO for breakfast at the bar; an ESPRESSO or MACCHIATO for a usual coffee break, when you offer it to someone else, after lunch or dinner (sometimes in this two cases is CORRETTO with liqueur); then we have the probably less common AMERICANO in substitution of a hot tea. All these coffees are commonly drunk while seated, in a ceramic cup not bigger than a standard cappuccino cup.

-In Autralia esistono: ESPRESSO,SHORT MACCHIATO, LONG MACCHIATO, MOCHA,  PICCOLO, LATTE, CAPPUCCINO, FLAT WHITE, SHORT BLACK, LONG BLACK, WHITE AMERICANO, DOUBLE, TRIPLE, ICED, BREWED e probabilmente qualcun altro che mi sfugge. A tutti questi vanno aggiunte le rispettive varianti con SKIM o SOY milk. Cio` che pero` spaventa un italiano qui non e` il numero spropositato di varianti, ma il fatto che non ci sia nessun tipo di relazione tra il caffe` e il momento della giornata o l'occasione in cui lo si beve: un caffe`-latte qui si beve al mattino cosi` come alla sera, cosi` come cenando (non dopo cena, cenando!). Quasi tutti i caffe` sono take-away, bevuti camminando o sbrigando altre faccende. In alcuni bar la tazza "large/grande" contiene circa mezzo litro, e nonostante cio` se non lo richiedi specificatamente (e paghi per uno shot extra) la quantita` di caffe` all'interno resta quella di un espresso, il resto e` tutto latte! / In Oz there are many types of coffee: ESPRESSO, SHORT MACCHIATO, LONG MACCHIATO, MOCHA, PICCOLO, LATTE, CAPPUCCINO, FLAT WHITE, SHORT BLACK, LONG BLACK, WHITE AMERICANO, DOUBLE, TRIPLE, ICED, BREWED (and I am probably forgetting to mention a few more). What really scares an Italian  here is not the number of variations to choose from, but the fact that there isn't any kind of relation between a certain type of coffee and the moment of the day or the occasion in which it is drunk: a latte here is drunk in the morning as well as in the evening and also dining (not after dinner, dining!). The vast majority of the coffees are for take-away, had while walking or doing something else. In some bars the large or grande cup has a capacity of circa half a liter, but nonetheless if you do not ask (and pay)for an extra shot the quantity of coffee remains the same of a normal espresso, the rest is all milk!

-In Italia il caffe` costa 1 euro e un panino 4/5 / In Italy a coffee costs 1 euro and a sandwich 4/5.
-In Australia un caffe` costa dai 3 ai 5 dollari e un panino 5/6 / In Oz a coffee costs from 3 to 5 dollars and a sandwich 5/6.

 

Tirando le somme, credo che qui la vera "anima" del caffe` si sia persa, non e` altro che una bevanda, da bere quando ti va, come ti va, senza particolari rituali o regole sacre. Questo un po' mi dispiace, non mi pare sia la stessa cosa bere un caffe` dall'altra parte del mondo piuttosto che in Italia. Preferisco il caffe` all'italiana: semplicissimo, fatto in casa, senza il problema di scegliere tra un menu` infinito, con grandezze diverse e diversi tipi di latte, ma con caffe` specifici per specifici momenti o occasioni.

Ma dietro questa semplicita` c'e` un mondo intero di significati nascosti che e` secondo me fantastico: solo in Italia un espresso puo` voler dire "casa" o  "e` ora di chiedere il conto?" o "fermati un attimo e entra a fare due chiacchere" o "prendiamoci una pausa dal lavoro"; se sei italiano il caffe` e` molto piu` che un po' d'acqua sporca!

To sum up, I believe that here the real "soul" of the coffee has been forgotten, it is just a drink, you drink it when you want, how you want, without particular rituals or golden rules. This kind of makes me sad, I don't feel like it is the same thing to drink a coffee in Oz and in Italy. I prefer the Italian way: very simple, home made, no big menus to choose from, different sizes or kinds of milk, but very specific moment or occasion for each coffee.

But behind this simplicity there is a hidden world of different shades that is fantastic: only in Italy a coffee means "home", "is it time to ask for the bill?", "do you wanna come inside and have a chat?" or "let's take a break from work"; if you are Italian, for you coffee is much more than dirty water!

Wallabies vs All Blacks

 

Sabato 18/10/2014; una data marcata sul calendario come importante e attesissima per settimane sia da me che da Valentina: ore 7pm kick-off, Australia vs Nuova Zelanda @SuncorpStadium.

Siamo riusciti a comprare due biglietti a meta` settembre, posti modesti, lontani dal campo, ma era il massimo che si poteva fare visti i costi dei biglietti per i settori migliori. 
 

 Sat 18/10/2014; a date marked on the calendar as important and long-awaited by me and Valentina: kick-off at 7pm, Australia vs New Zealand @SuncorpStadium.
We were able to get 2 tickets a month before, 2 humble seats, quite far from the pitch, but it was the max we could afford at that moment.
 

Quando il giorno e` finalmente arrivato non stavamo piu` nella pelle!

Il mattino prima, andando a scuola avevo incontrato due All Blacks con i quali ho fatto una foto, da giorni ormai si vedevano tifosi neozelandesi ovunque, e tutti parlavano di questo evento; ero entrato in modalita`-partita ben prima del fischio di inizio!

When the day came we were so excited!
The day before I met 2 All blacks going to school and took a pic with them, for days kiwi supporters had populated the city and everybody was talking about this event; I was in game-mood way before the kick-off!
 

Alle 6 in punto finisco di lavorare, bevo un paio di birre con Valentina, il mio boss e i suoi amici e tutti insieme ci dirigiamo allo stadio (5/10 minuti dal mio ristorante).
Abbastanza facilmente troviamo il nostro settore e i nostri posti; lo stadio era bellissimo e l'atmosfera incredibile!
Pochi minuti dopo arriva il momento che ogni appassionato di rugby sogna di vivere una volta nella vita: la HAKA!
Per quanto breve e` stato un`esperienza davvero intensa; veramente da brividi!
Non siamo andati allo stadio come tifosi, piu` come spettatori imparziali; ma dopo questo pre-match eravamo talmente carichi che non abbiamo potuto fare a meno che trasformarci in veri e propri supporters Kiwi!

At 6 o'clock I ended my shift, drank a couple of beers with Valentina, my boss and his friends and then we headed to the stadium (5/10 mins away from the restaurant).
We quite easily found our seats; the structure was wonderful and the atmosphere unbelievable!
A few minutes later the moment that every rugby-man wants to live at least once in his life came: the HAKA live!
Altough it finished quickly, it has been such an intense experience; it gave me goosebumps!
We didn't go to the stadium as supporters, but more as impartial spectators; however, after this pre-match we were so pumped that we suddenly became real Kiwis!

La partita e` stata da subito interessantissima, con l'Australia (sfavorita) che riesce a tenere testa agli avversari per tutto il primo tempo.
Nonostante le 45000 persone presenti allo stadio c'erano diversi posti liberi nei settori piu` costosi, cosi` a meta` partita, dopo aver preso hot dogs e birre ci siamo riusciti a spostare due anelli piu` in basso, a 15/20 metri dal campo, in posti che ci sarebbero costati il doppio se prenotati prima.

The match has been interesting from the very first minute, with the Australian team ahead for the whole first half.
Despite the 45000 spectators there were still some free seats in the other sectors, so at half time we grabbed hot dogs and beers and moved down to an area much closer to the pitch, 15/20 meters away, where we would have paid double to if we had to book before.  

Inizia cosi` il secondo tempo, con la formazione di casa e i relativi tifosi gasatissimi per un risultato che si aspettava da anni.
Dall'altra parte i neozelandesi, in campo e non, non hanno mai mollato, dimostrando grande carattere.
Dopo una rincorsa punto a punto durata 70/75 minuti l'Australia centra l'occasione di portarsi a +6, mettendo una seria ipoteca sul risultato finale.
Quando mancano ormai soltanto 2 minuti alla fine pero` succede l'incredibile: i Wallabies calciano la palla, regalando l'ultimo possesso agli avversari.
Nel preciso istante in cui ai Kiwi e` stata data quest'ultima possibilita`, ho come avuto la sensazione che tutti i 30 giocatori e le 45000 persone attorno sapessero benissimo cosa sarebbe successo...
Non abbiamo dovuto aspettare molto, la meta tanto attesa e` arrivata, proprio davanti al nostro settore, facendo esplodere la parte nera dello stadio mentre i locali quasi dovevano trattenere  le lacrime.
Sotto di un punto serviva centrare la trasformazione per vincere a tempo scaduto e cosi` e` stato.
Un finale pazzesco, emozionante e adrenalinico; non avrei potuto chiedere di meglio da questa partita! Una delle esperienze sportive piu` belle di sempre!

The second half began, with the home team and the supporters super excited for a score that has been dreamt for years.
On the other hand I gotta say that the New Zealanders have never given up, showing great strenght of character.
After a long chase of 70/75 minutes the All Blacks saw their chances blown away by a successful penalty kick that took Australia's lead up to 6 points; they had the game in their hands.
When only 2 minutes were separating the Wallabies from a memorable win, somthing incredible happened: they kicked the ball away, giving one last chance to the opposing team to score.
In that precise moment I had the sensations that every single person there knew what was going to happen...
Not even a couple of minutes later the expected try arrived, it was scored in front of our seats, making the black crowd exploding in a huge roar while the Australians were desperate.
The All Blacks needed a successful conversion to to win the match in the extra-time, and so it was.
An unbelievable ending, exciting and full of emotions; I couldn't ask for a better match! One of the best sport related experiences of my life!

The first month

Brisbane Festival

 

In questo primo mese qui a Brisbane abbiamo assistito, putroppo poco attivamente, al Brisbane Festival, un evento di 3 settimane nel quale si tenevano ogni giorno spettacoli, concerti, attivita` di ogni genere in diverse aree della citta`.

E` stato pubblicizzato tantissimo e moltissima gente ha preso parte agli eventi, specialmente alla cerimonia di chiusura, con uno spettacolo pirotecnico al quale hanno assistito centinaia di migliaia di persone!

In this first month here in Brisbane we have participated, unfortunately not very actively, to the Brisbane Festival, a big event of 3 weeks in which there were shows, concerts, different kinds of activities in many areas of the city.

It has been promoted a lot and many people attended the events, especially the ending ceremony where hundreds of thousands spectators watched the fireworks!

Io e Valentina abbiamo visto uno spettacolo davvero particolare nel primo weekend di festival, con attori e cantanti che, con l'aiuto di una gru, recitavano sospesi fino a 50 metri di altezza in una sorta di remake di "Alice in wonderland".

Poi un po` per gli impegni un po` perche` molte attivita` erano a pagamento ci siamo limitati ad assistere a piccoli eventi correlati come mercatini, balli, musica dal vivo, mostre, senza prendere parte alle attivita` principali della manifestazione.

Valentina and I have watched a very particular show the first day of Festival, a remake of "Alice in Wonderland" with actors and singers flying, helped by a crane, at 50 meters from the ground!

Then in part because of our every-day tasks, and also for the cost of many activities we just took part of small related activities such as street markets, dances, live music, exhibitions without actually attend the main events of the Festival. 

Do Do Land

Le voci riguardo alla chiusura del festival mi hanno pero` incuriosito e visto che il 27 settembre ero di riposo al lavoro (al contrario di Valentina) ho deciso di andare da solo a South Bank, da dove tutti mi hanno consigliato di guardare i fuochi d'artificio.

Uscito di casa due ore prima sapendo che ci sarebbe stata moltissima gente e molti controlli anti-terrorismo che avrebbero rallentato l'entrata, mi sono incamminato sul lungo-fiume.

Dopo poco ha iniziato a sentirsi un rumore pazzesco, due jet hanno volato sopra la citta` sfiorando i grattacieli per mezzora, seguiti poi da 4 elicotteri militari in formazione. Non ho mai visto un aereo volare cosi basso ne` mai sentito un fracasso simile!

The rumors about the closing night got my attention, and since I was free the 27th of September I decided to go to Southbank, from where everyone suggested to watch the fireworks.

I left home 2 hrs before the show and start walking by the river, knowing that many people were going to be there and a lot of security procedures could slow me down.

After a few minutes I began to hear an insane noise: two jet-planes were flying over the city, very close to the skyscrapers, followed by 4 helicopters. I have never seen such a low flight nor heard such a powerful noise!

 

Dopo una lunga attesa in mezzo a migliaia e migliaia di persone sono incominciati i fuochi. Mi avevano detto che l'attesissimo RiverFire (questo spettacolo) sarebbe stato vissuto come un capodanno dalla gente del posto e che i fuochi sarebbero stati una cosa pazzesca; in effetti cosi` e` stato!

30 minuti ininterrotti di fuochi, di tutti i tipi che scoppiavano a tempo di musica, con forme mai viste prima, lanciati da 4 postazioni in mezzo al fiume, 3 sui ponti principali e 5/6 su diversi grattacieli nella city. 

E` stato un grande spettacolo e la giusta chiusura per un evento come il Brisbane Festival!

 After a long wait among thousands of people the show began. I got told the awaited Riverfire would have been celebrated like a new year's eve with amazing fireworks; and so it was!
30 mins of fireworks of any kind, exploding to the sound of music in shapes I had never seen before, shot from 4 platforms along the river, 3 bridges and 5/6 rooftops in the city.
It has been a great show and the fair end of a marvellous event such as the Brisbane Festival!

Tornare a scuola

Going back to school

Sono passati piu` di tre anni dal giorno in cui sono uscito per l'ultima volta come studente dal mio liceo, dopo aver dato l'esame orale per la maturita`. Quel giorno mi ricordo di aver pensato che non sarei piu` tornato in una scuola nel mio futuro, almeno in quello prossimo. Avrei dovuto invece pensare "non tornero` per scelta a scuola nei prossimi anni", perche` in effetti a scuola, dopo tanto tempo, ci sono tornato.

More then 3 yrs have passed from the day I left my school as a student for the last time, after I have done my final exam. I remember thinking that day that I would have never come back at school in the future, or at least not in a long time. I should have thought "I am not going to choose to go back to school", in fact after a while I am back in a class.

Kaplan - Brisbane

 Per tornare in Australia sapevo che avrei probabilmente sfruttato il visto studente e quindi obbligatoriamente mi sarei dovuto iscrivere a un corso, ma ho sperato per un po` di poter trovare altre soluzioni. Cosi` non e` andata e quindi mi e` toccato qualche giorno fa rimettermi la cartella in spalla e uscire di casa per il mio (ennesimo) primo giorno di scuola.

Tornare a svegliarsi presto, preparare i libri e correre fuori di casa con la paura di arrivare in ritardo e di essere lasciato fuori dalla classe e` stato pesante ma allo stesso tempo, in qualche modo, bello. In questi ultimi giorni ho rivissuto un po` di sensazioni perse da anni: quell'imbarazzo tra nuovi compagni di classe, l'aspettare l'intervallo o la fine della mattinata, mangiare in 45 minuti in 5 su un tavolino parlando della scuola per poi resistere all'abbiocco che ti prende durante le lezioni al pomeriggio...

Alla fine quello del liceo e` stato un periodo fantastico e ritrovare dei suoi aspetti adesso, ogni giorno, nelle piccole cose che succedono a scuola mi rallegra.

To re-enter the country I knew I would have probably got a student visa and therefore chosen a school, but for long I hoped to find another solution. It didn't happen and so a few days ago I have had to put the backpack on for the (nth) first day of school.

To restart waking up early, prepare the books and run to be in class on time has been hard but somehow nice as well. I have re-experienced in these last days many sensations that I had lost years ago: the embarrassing moment when you meet your new classmates, waiting the break from the very first minute of lesson, eating in 45 mins together with 4 people on the same table speaking about homework and the school and then trying not to sleep during the afternoon class...
In the end I have to say that high school represents a fantastic period of my life and finding little memories of it in every-day-life makes me happier.

Questo corso in particolare durera` poco ed e` stata davvero una scelta forzata quella di iscrivermi: dovevo tappare il buco tra settembre (quando sono arrivato) e gennaio (quando iniziero` il corso professionale) per avere il visto. Pero` devo ammettere che sto imparando molto anche se il livello non e` molto alto, e parecchie attivita` interattive rendono lo studio piu` interessante.

Mi sto applicando parecchio per essere poi molto piu` sciolto e tranquillo ad affrontare il corso professionale che sara` sicuramente piu` impegnativo, anche se la svogliatezza che mi accompagnava al liceo mi ha seguito anche in Australia!


This course in particular is gonna be quite short and I was forced to choose it to fill the gap between my arrival in OZ and the beginning of the course I am planning to start in January, and to get the visa.I gotta say though that even if the level of the lessons is not that high I am learning a lot and in an interesting way as well, with plenty of interactive activities.I am making an effort to be more relaxed and used to tests when the time for the VET course will come, since it will be for sure harder than this one.
The laziness I couldn't get rid of in high school though followed me all the way to Australia!

Un nuovo inizio

A new beginning 

Avrei voluto scrivere un post poco prima di partire, ancora a casa, con lo zaino pronto e tante persone da salutare; però purtroppo nelle ultime 2 settimane sono stato talmente occupato con i preparativi e con l'inizio di questa nuova avventura che solo adesso sto trovando il tempo di scrivere due righe, sdraiato sul letto della mia nuova casa, quando ormai il grosso dei problemi e degli impegni che si presentano con un cambiamento del genere sono acqua passata.

I wanted to post before leaving, when I was still home, with the packpack packed and many people to say goodbye to; but unfortunately in the last two weeks I have been crazy busy, so much that only now I'm finding some time to write, from my new bed in my new "home", when all the problems and all the things that have to be done after a big change like mine are things of the past.

Sono state due settimane davvero piene, in cui non ci siamo fermati un secondo e abbiamo speso un sacco di soldi; sicuramente qualcosa da aggiungere all'elenco mi e` sfuggito, ma spero di aver reso l'idea ugualmente.

We've been through 2 very busy weeks, in which we haven't stopped a single second and have spent a lot of money; surely there is more to be put on the list that I forgot, but I hope that's enough to get an idea of what we've done.

 

New house - Bridgewater Terrace

Adesso siamo tranquilli, la casa e` fantastica, il lavoro c'e` e le grosse spese sono finite. Dovro` valutare se lavorare 2/3 turni a settimana mi bastera` o se dovro` trovare un secondo lavoro (e non sara` facile vista la mia disponibilita` limitata). Ma ad ogni modo fino al 22 settembre, quando iniziero` la scuola non potrei lavorare comunque e quindi non me ne preoccupo per adesso. 

 Now we feel relaxed; the house is amazing, we found a job and we are done spending a lot. I will have to see if 2/3 shifts/pw it's enough or if I have to look for another job (and it's not gonna be easy with my limited availability). Anyway, until september the 22nd, when I'll start my course, I cannot work so I don't worry about it at the moment.

Pensero` a rilassarmi un pochino , trovare i miei nuovi ritmi e godermi la primavera che e` appena iniziata!

Australia 2011-2012

I primi due mesi

The first two months

In questo periodo, tre anni fa, ero in partenza per il mio primo viaggio da solo: per il 15 agosto 2011 avevo prenotato un volo di sola andata per l'Australia.

Finiti da un mese circa gli esami di maturità ho salutato gli amici e preparato la valigia; la mattina di Ferragosto la mia famiglia e la mia ragazza mi hanno accompagnato all'aeroporto e dopo lunghissimi saluti bagnati da lacrimoni sono partito.

In this period, back in 2011, I was about to leave for my first lone journey: I had a booking on august the 15th for a one-way trip to Australia.

About a month after I got my diploma, I packed my stuff and said goodbye to all my friends; that morning my gf and family took me to the airport, and after many long and sad greetings I jumped on the plane.

Dopo 3 infiniti voli nei quali la malinconia mi ha tenuto sempre sveglio arrivo a Brisbane. 

Al contrario di ciò che credevo a prendermi al terminal non c'era nessuno, quello che sarebbe stato il mio futuro coinquilino aveva infatti frainteso le mie direttive; così dopo 30 ore senza dormire mi toccavano i primi problemi, ma con un giro di chiamate e email e grazie alla mia ragazza in Italia riuscii a contattarlo.

La prima settimana fu un disastro: il coinquilino era un uomo di mezz'età dall'Iran, che stava facendo il Ramadan (quindi avevamo il frigo vuoto), la casa era tutta piena di scatoloni perchè avremmo traslocato dopo pochi giorni, aveva già scollegato internet e messo via la seconda chiave quindi io non potevo né uscire da solo né chiamare a casa o comunque svagarmi con il pc.

A tutto ciò si aggiunge una considerevole distanza dal centro città, che mi ha portato dopo soli 8 giorni a cambiare casa e trasferirmi a Carseldine, dove la padrona era una ragazza indiana che viveva insieme a me ed un ragazzo inglese; ci piaceva mangiare in compagnia e spesso facevamo la spesa insieme (frigo sempre pieno) e finalmente avevo internet quando volevo: le cose si sistemavano.

After 3 endless flights in which sadness was keeping me awake I landed in Brisbane.

No one was at the terminal to pick me up, my flat-mate misunderstood my directions and after 30 hours without sleeping the first problems came. Through many calls and emails and with the help of my gf I was able to contact him.

The first week was awful: my flate-mate was a man from Iran in his 40s doing Ramadan (so we had an empty fridge)and the house was full of boxes 'cause we were moving few days after; no internet connection and no second key for me. I couldn't go out alone nor call Italy using my laptop.  

All this, plus a considerable distance from the city centre, made me decide to move after only 8 days to Carseldine, where I shared a house with an indian girl and an english guy; we liked to go to the grocery store and dine together (so the fridge was always full) and I could finally use internet whenever I liked: things were getting better.



Iniziai a uscire tutti i giorni, a prendere confidenza con i mezzi e a girare il centro e le zone vicine in cerca di lavoro. Non ci volle molto: dopo un paio di giorni di ricerche, senza nemmeno aver stampato un curriculum, mi imbatto in una pizzeria italiana a Milton, a due passi dal Suncorp Stadium, 15 min a piedi dal centro città. Uno dei camerieri stava per andarsene e presero me a sostituirlo; dopo nemmeno 2 settimane in Australia iniziavo a lavorare.
Finito il primo weekend al ristorante arrivò la paga, ero felicissimo! 
Avrei iniziato da subito a guadagnare e risparmiare per fare ciò che volevo! 
La felicità fu smorzata poche ore dopo, quando, dopo aver perso l'ultimo treno per tornare a casa, decisi di passare la notte in uno dei pochi posti aperti anche in settimana fino al mattino: il casinò.
I primi tre giorni di lavoro li bruciai in poche ore alla roulette...ma la presi bene.

Svolte le varie questioni "burocratiche" negli uffici (visto, TFN, conto in banca) e finito il periodo iniziale dove ogni cosa era nuova, sia sul lavoro che nella vita, ho iniziato a trovare un mio ritmo, delle mie abitudini e mi accorsi in poco tempo che i 40 minuti di treno (e conseguente spesa) per andare al lavoro e le corse per non perdere l'ultima corsa finito il turno, erano facilmente evitabili cambiando nuovamente casa.


I started to go out every day, using public transports and looking for a job in the CBD and the areas nearby. It didn't took me very long: a couple of days after, I bumped into an italian pizzeria in Milton, close to the Suncorp Stadium, 15 mins walk from the centre. They were looking for someone to replace a waiter that would have left few days later; so after not even 2 weeks, without having printed a single CV, I got a job.
At the end of the 1st working weekend I got the first pay, I was so excited!
The excitment unfortunately lasted only a few hours; I missed the last train to come back home after work and I decided to spend the night at the casino, where I wasted my money gambling; but I took it well.

When I was done with all the paper works such as visa label, TFN and bank account, and when the initial fervor vanished, I started finding my rithym in life, my habits and I realized that i could easily avoid the 40 mins trip to get to work (and his cost) and the runs after the shift to get on the last train, by moving into a new house...again.

My new accomodation in Roma Parkland

Dopo una settimana o due di ricerche andai a vedere un appartamento a Roma parkland, il giardino più bello della città, a due passi dal centro e dalla pizzeria. Fu amore a prima vista, si trattava di una serie di palazzi nuovissimi, tutti con piscina, sauna, idromassaggio, palestra e zona BBQ, che si affacciavano sul parco. Al settimo piano di uno di questi c'era l'appartamento in questione, nel quale mi sarei preso una stanza (in realtà sarebbe dovuto essere un soggiorno) con una vista pazzesca. I coinquilini sembravano simpatici e più vicini ai miei gusti, quindi mi ci spostai subito.
Non avevo più pensieri, andavo a piedi ovunque, tutto era a portata di mano, stavo benissimo!
L'unica pecca in tutto ciò erano le poche ore che facevo al lavoro (circa 3/4 turni serali a settimana); guadagnavo comunque abbastanza, ma volevo fare di più, volevo occupare le mie giornate e provare qualcosa di nuovo.
A inizio ottobre decisi di fermarmi per la prima volta di fronte a un fundraiser (uno di quelli che per strada ti ferma e cerca di convincerti a donare a qualche organizzazione no-profit o simili), ma non per ascoltare ciò che aveva da dirmi, bensì per chiedergli come potevo iniziare a fare anche io quel lavoro.
Lo feci per gioco, senza grosse pretese e non pensavo nemmeno di riuscire a passare la prima scrematura in ufficio visto l'inglese ancora non perfetto.
Di certo non avrei mai immaginato che quello sarebbe stato il mio lavoro per i 9 mesi successivi.


After a week or two looking for a new place I went to see this apartement close to Roma Parkland, the nicest garden in Brisbane, 2 mins walk from the city and from the pizzeria.
It had been love at 1st sight: there were 7 brand new buildings all with pool, gym, sauna, jacuzzi and BBQ area, literally in front of the park.
At the 7th floor of one of them there was my apartement, where I would have taken a room (that was actually a part of the living room) with an amazing view.
The flat mates were nice and I moved in immediately.
It had been a very stress-less period, I could go anywhere by foot and everything I needed was there, I was so happy!
The only "negative" thing was that I wasn't working much (3/4 night shifts a week); it was enough but I wanted to do something during the day and try something new.
The first week of october I stopped for the 1st time to a fundraiser (one of those guys approaching people on the street asking for some kind of donation for various organisations), not to listen to him, but to ask him how I could start doing his job.
I did it for fun, with no expectations, thinking that even getting through the first interview would have been quite impossible since my english was not perfect.
Surely I couldn't imagine that that would have been my job for the next 9 months.
